(This exam will make up 30% of your final mark. 80% of your mark on this exam will be based upon content.  20% of your mark on this exam will be based upon mechanics [organization, layout, grammar & spelling].  This expectation is that the answers you provide will be in paragraph form with organization of thought, proper sentence structure, spelling and grammar.  If you answer in point form, you may get marks for content, but you will lose marks with respect to mechanics.  The marks behind each question are the content marks.  There are a total of 60 marks for content and an additional 15 marks for mechanics.  The exam is out of 75.)

  1. There were 4 belief systems in the area of Colossae that were pressuring the believers in the Colossian church to compromise their faith.  List all 4 and provide a one sentence description or each one.  (8 marks)
  2. Why was this a concern? (2 marks)
  3. Describe one example of something similar happening today. (2 marks)
  4. In response to this threat to the Colossian church, Paul emphasizes one particular person of the Trinity and his supremacy in two particular areas.  Who is this person and what are the two areas? (3 marks)
  5. In the Soul Cravings Prequel, Erwin McManus says that our souls crave for 3 things in particular.  List each of those 3 soul cravings. (3 marks)
  6. In the chapter, “Religion and the Gospel” from The Reason for God, Timothy Keller describes 2 ways that people use to try to save themselves.  Both are sin.  What are those 2 ways? (2 marks)

  9. How is Christ’s message different from the message of the founders of other religions? (2 marks)
  10. In Colossians 3:9-10, Paul writes, “Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”  Describe your old self and your new self, listing 2 qualities for each. (4 marks)
  11. In the chapter, “Four Steps to Freedom” from When Good Men Are Tempted, Bill Perkins describes four steps to freedom that are very helpful when dealing with habitual sin.  List each of the 4 steps.(4 marks)
  12. In the same chapter, Perkins lists 3 elements of victory.  List those 3 elements and describe how each element is helpful to us in dealing with sin. (6 marks)
  13. In Colossians 3:11, Paul writes, “Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.”  How has Jesus removed the earthly distinctions that tend to separate people from each other?  As followers of Jesus, how should we treat other people, particularly those who look, think or act differently from us? (2 marks)
  14. We live out the new identity that Jesus has given us in community with others.  Describe 3 qualities and/or behaviours that we willingly live out in our relationships with others as God’s chosen people. (3 marks)
  15. List 3 “Friends for the Journey” that God has given to you. (3 marks)
  16. One of the themes in Colossians in thankfulness.  List 3 things for which you are thankful to God. (3 marks)
  17. What does the fullness of Christ mean to you? (3 marks)
  18. Though your new life in Christ is hidden, what differences might others see in you because of your relationship with Jesus Christ? (2 marks)
  19. How are your relationships different because of your relationship with Jesus Christ? (2 marks)
  20. What helps you to live according to the new identity that Jesus has given you? (2 marks)
