The Total Package

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.  He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation (Col. 1:15)

Though we may not always be aware of it, there exists in the human heart an incessant quest for something more. Often this quest finds its shape in an ongoing acquisition of more stuff, more deep and rich experiences, or more likes on social media. But those things will all eventually leave us empty and drained.

God put that desire for more in our hearts to draw us to himself. And because all the fullness of God is beyond our comprehension, God accommodated himself to us and God. God the Father sent his Son, Jesus, into the world not only to be our Saviour and bring us into the family of God by paying the full cost of forgiveness of all our sins, but also to show us and the whole world what God is really like.

All the fullness of God exists in Jesus, so when we see Jesus, we see what all of God looks like on a scale that we finite human beings can comprehend. And it is in the God-human Jesus that all of our desires for more are quenched.

Do you want to surround yourself with good stuff so that you can have the security your heart desires? Rest in Jesus’ supremacy for you and trust that, because he stands above creation and all things were created through him, he will provide what he knows is best for you in every situation.

Do you want to gather deep, rich experiences so your life can resonate with the significance that your heart desires? Rest in Jesus’ sacrifice for you and trust that, because he came into this world to pay the full cost of forgiveness for all your sins so you can live life with him, your life will be richer, fuller and more abundant than you could ever imagine.

Do you want to gather social media likes so that you can have the affirmation that your heart desires? Rest in Jesus’ love for you and trust that, because his love for you is infinite in quantity and purity, you already have in Jesus all the love you will ever know.

In his Confessions, Augustine of Hippo wrote, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” Come home to Jesus and find in him all that your heart truly desires. He is the total package.

Dear Jesus, help me to see that my desire for more was meant for you and seeking to quench that desire in anything else is merely a meaningless chasing after the wind. Help me to grow in knowing you in all your fullness so that I may taste your rich, loving goodness and be more than fully satisfied. Amen.
